Sailing The Caribbean Aboard Sea Cloud

March 5 - 12, 2015

The Sea Cloud was originally built in 1931 and called the Hussar, the largest private sailing yacht ever built. It was commissioned by E.F. Hutton, a wealthy Wall Street business man. His wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, both an heiress and a successful business woman, designed the luxery yacht completely to her liking - from the black hull to the antiques that would be displayed in each cabin. The Hussar spent at least nine months of the year at sea, taking the Huttons anywhere they wanted to go, in luxuious style, until their divorce in 1935.

Marjorie loved the Hussar more than anything, and E.F. signed the ship over to his ex-wife one day after the divorce. Hoping to start anew, Marjorie changed its color to white and renamed the vessel Sea Cloud. During WWII, Sea Cloud was placed in the service of the Coast Guard. At the end of the war, Sea Cloud was the only private luxury yacht of its size still underway. It was then returned to Marjorie and spent most of her time on the east coast of the U.S. As time passed, Marjorie could no longer afford to keep Sea Cloud, which now had a 72-person crew, and it was sold.

Over the years, Sea Cloud changed hands and names a number of times. Finally, a group of German business men purchased the ship, restored her, and retored her name, Sea Cloud. In 1979 Sea Cloud took her first cruise under a new flag. She's been at home on the sea ever since.
